O come, O come, Emmanuel,
And ransom captive Israel,
That mourns in lonely exile here,
Until the Son of God appears.
Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel
Shall come to thee, O Israel
O Come, O Come, Emmanuel is one of my favorite carols sung at Christmastime. It was actually written to be sung during the last seven days of Advent, something I just learned this week.

What is Advent?
For some, Advent is a preparation for the birth of Christ…but…for many, myself included, the true meaning of Advent is the preparation for the Second Coming of Christ.
The word “Advent” comes from the Latin term “adventus”‘ which means “coming”.
Advent begins on the Sunday that falls between November 27 and December 3. This year is will start of Sunday, November 28 and will end on Friday, December 24.
The current celebration of Advent symbolizes the church in these last days, (Acts 2:17 and Hebrews 1:2) as God’s people wait for the return of Christ to consummate His eternal kingdom.
During Advent, you light four candles, one for each Sunday leading up to Christmas. There are three purple, one pink and one white…which is used to light the other candles. The candles wach represent something different…
- Hope, promise
- Preparation, waiting or prophecy
- Joy, peace
- Love, adoration
Some also use a wreath with the candles and each piece has a meaning. The evergreen of the wreath represents everlasting life in Jesus, the cirle of the wreath reminds of God’s unceasing love and the eternal life He promises us as His children.
The essence of Advent is that Jesus has come and He will come again, I believe very soon!
