Where would I move to, if I had to move tomorrow? The answer would be Southport, NC. If you are a Nicolas Sparks fan, then you know that “Safe Haven” was filmed there. The history and beautiful homes there are amazing. Of course I would want a home on the river in Southport. Surrounded by other islands, Bald Head and Oak Island, boats from all over the world have to come through there to get to the port in Wilmington.
North Carolina Maritime Museum: A great place to find out all of the historical facts is the Maritime Museum on Moore St. They also have all kinds of programs for people of all ages.
The Christmas House in Southport: One of mine and my mom’s favorite places to visit when in Southport is the Christmas House. Just to walk around there is fun. They also have a candy store inside with all kinds of different candies. Even some that you may remember from your childhood.
Fishy Fishy Cafe: Located on the waterfront at Yacht Basin Dr…..it has some of the best food around Southport. This week was my first time trying Fishy Fishy, but it was delish! I ordered the Bang Bang Shrimp taco, my mom had the Oyster Po’ Boy and my dad had the seafood platter. Everything was cooked to perfection. You can sit inside or out, but I would recommend outside dining. Always a good breeze coming off the water. And I think on most weekends they have live music.
Port City Java: Yes, I know that there are Port City Java’s in other areas but I must say that they have some of the best coffee around. Always a stop when we go through Southport! Get the Black&Tan frappuccino.
Stroll: Last but not least, take an evening stroll through Southport. The views are stunning and the weather is awesome. Being right on the water way, you usually have a breeze.
These are just a few of the ideas of things to do in Southport, NC. There are many more places to eat and quaint shops. And if you are wanting to spend the weekend be sure to check out the several bed and breakfast there…. 1) Lois Jane’s Riverview Inn; 2) Robert Ruark Inn; 3) Bell Clemmons House; 4) Captain Newton’s Inn; 5) The Brunswick Inn.
While visiting the area, ride the ferry over to Fort Fisher and go to Carolina/Kure Beach. It is quite the ride. Also you are a stone’s throw away from Oak Island, which in my opinion is a hidden treasure. It is my favorite beach to go to. It’s a beautiful beach with not so many people yet you are not far from Wilmington or Myrtle Beach is you want to shop.
As you already are aware of, I love my home state of North Carolina and feel blessed to have been born here. It truly is a great place to live. There are so many places that I have yet to see and cannot wait to visit those places so I can share with you the experience with the hope that you can visit too. I would love to hear from you if you have visited Southport and what your favorite things to do are!!
