Hello, my sweet friends!!!
I hope that you are all well. This is a fun yet slightly unique post for me. I don’t usually write about products that I buy, but these were too much fun to pass upon.
So Let’s Dig In…
While I may be a crafty person and am multi-passionate about different crafts……I am not a painter/drawer. I leave that side of crafting up to my sisters. Who, by the way, can paint and draw just about anything.
A few months ago I was watching a sweet blogger that I follow, Brooke of Re-Fabbed, paint with watercolor markers, and I thought, “Hey, maybe I could try that too.” So the search began for the right watercolor pencils, markers, and paint.
I researched and researched until I thought I had found the best ones. So I placed my order at Amazon, like so many do, and waited with great anticipation for my order to arrive. And as is true of Amazon, it did not take long to get here.
More about which ones I chose later.
Which One is My Favorite?
I pulled all of my watercolor supplies out while at the beach recently and set down to try them. Little side note, when I purchased the watercolor supplies I went ahead and bought a pack of watercolor paper too.
Watercolor Pencils:
First, we tried watercolor pencils. The brand that I bought comes in a metal container with 72 pencils. When using a watercolor pencil, you will see that there is a difference between a regular color pencil and watercolor pencils. To start with, the pencils just seemed to be a little smoother when drawing and they smell a little like paint, so you know that there is a difference. Drawing with them was very smooth and fun. I did not get the watercolor effect that I wanted as you would with paint, but I think for a beginner, these are a great way to start playing with watercolors and they are quite reasonable in price. For 72 pencils, I spent $24 and they come with 2 brushes and a sharpener.
Watercolor Markers:
Next up, we used the markers!! And I really liked the markers, again very good price on them. I paid $12 and looking back at them now, they are on sale for $10. The really cool aspect of the pencils and markers is that you can draw your picture then go back with a brush and water and spread your colors out like a watercolor painting. The only thing about the markers, they come with a brush pen to put water in to do the watercolor art, but I could not get my pen to open, so I just used a brush. And $10 for 24 markers, I was willing to overlook that. If you are like me, you will have brushes sitting around.
Watercolor Paints:
And last but not least, we used the paint! It was ultimately my favorite. There is just something about being able to mix the colors like you want to and the paint was very smooth. One thing I did learn when watercolor painting, it is very forgiving. It was easier for me to fix my mistakes. And the paints were the cheapest of all, at $9 and you get a pack of brushes. Cannot get much better than that.
Recap:
All three are great ways to try watercolor painting and it all comes down to a personal preference. My personal favorite is watercolor paints.
I can say that I have really learned a lot by teaching myself the ins and outs of watercolor painting and have loved every step along the way. I am excited to keep working on it and getting better over time and hope that I have encouraged you to give it a try. It is a fun way to tap into that creative side I believe we all have.
HAPPY PAINTING!!!!
